The problem
Artists needed local discovery, and portfolio pages had to earn organic search traffic without a thin SPA shell.
What we did
- Indexed artists for proximity search in Elasticsearch.
- Server-rendered portfolio galleries for crawlability.
- Structured routes around city and style intent.
How people search for artists
People look for tattoo artists by style and place: "fine line artist near me", "realism tattoo in my city". A marketplace earns that traffic only if it has a crawlable page that matches each kind of search, and only if that page shows real portfolio content when a crawler or a person first loads it.
Server-rendered galleries
Portfolio galleries were server-rendered, so every artist page returns complete HTML with name, styles, location and gallery markup. Search engines see the same page a visitor sees, without waiting on client-side fetches. On image-heavy pages, that also helps Largest Contentful Paint, because the main image is in the first response instead of arriving after JavaScript runs.
Proximity search and intent routes
Artists were indexed in Elasticsearch for proximity search, so "near me" and city searches return results sorted by distance. Routes were structured around city and style intent, which gives search engines a clear page for each combination people actually search for and gives users a useful page on its own.
Applying this to your marketplace
City and category combinations multiply fast, and most will be empty at first. Only index combinations with enough real listings, keep the rest out of the sitemap with noindex, and add something unique to each indexed page. Give the first gallery image loading priority, lazy-load the rest, and write alt text that describes the work.

Organic traffic rose 45% after SSR galleries and proximity search went live.
