Go Green Together — Rails Energy Dashboard: 40% Efficiency Gain
40% better operational efficiency. Energy management platform with real-time dashboards, alerts, and a four-person delivery team.
Lead Developer · Jun 2019 — Jul 2021 · Ruby on Rails 6 · Ruby 3.0 · Sidekiq · ActionCable
The problem
Energy operators needed live dashboards and alerts, not batch reports that arrived after the window to act.
What we did
- Led a team of four through architecture, schema design, and release cadence.
- Automated task scheduling and tightened database schemas for recurring workloads.
- Shipped ActionCable dashboards with Sidekiq-backed alerting.
Leading a four-person team
As lead developer from June 2019 to July 2021, I owned architecture, schema design and release cadence for a team of four. With a small team, every hour spent on repeat manual work is an hour not spent on product, so the early priority was automating the recurring tasks the team and operators kept doing by hand.
Why live alerts beat batch reports
Energy data is only useful while you can still act on it. A batch report that arrives the next morning tells operators what went wrong yesterday. So alerting moved to Sidekiq background jobs that evaluate incoming data continuously, and dashboards update through ActionCable over WebSockets, so operators see changes as they happen instead of refreshing a page.
Schemas built for recurring workloads
Scheduled jobs run the same queries over and over. Schemas were tightened around those access patterns, so recurring work stayed fast as data grew. Automated task scheduling replaced manual triggers, which removed a whole class of "someone forgot to run it" problems.
Applying this to your platform
List the tasks your team or operators repeat every day or week, and automate the most frequent one first. Push time-sensitive signals as alerts rather than reports. When you add real-time dashboards on Rails, keep the heavy computation in background jobs and use ActionCable only to deliver results, so the web processes stay responsive.
Outcome
Operational efficiency improved 40% once scheduling, schemas, and real-time alerts were in place.
