NextFlag — React Native + GraphQL App: 50% More Engagement
50% higher engagement after gamification. Mobile-first social discovery app with geolocation feeds and GraphQL.
React Native · GraphQL · Rails
The problem
Discovery feeds felt static, so users skimmed once and left instead of returning through the week.
What we did
- Built geolocation-aware feeds for nearby social discovery.
- Exposed data through GraphQL for flexible client queries.
- Rolled out gamification loops after the core feed stabilized.
Why static feeds lose users
A discovery feed that looks the same every time gives people no reason to come back. Users skimmed once and left, and a user who leaves after one skim rarely sees a push notification as a reason to return. For a social discovery app, the feed has to feel local and current, and opening the app has to be worth something beyond the first visit.
Geolocation-aware feeds over GraphQL
Feeds were built around location, so what users see depends on what is nearby. Data was exposed through GraphQL, which let the React Native client request exactly the fields each screen needed. On mobile networks that keeps payloads small, and screens can change shape without a new backend endpoint for every variation.
Gamification after the core worked
Gamification loops were rolled out only after the core feed was stable. Rewards on top of a feed that is slow or irrelevant just reward people for tolerating a bad product. With the geo feed working first, gamification gave users a reason to return through the week, and engagement improved 50%.
Applying this to your app
Fix relevance before adding retention mechanics: make the core feed local, fresh and fast, then layer streaks or rewards on top. Use GraphQL when several mobile screens need different shapes of the same data. Measure return visits per week, not only session length, since return visits are what show whether people want to come back.
Outcome
Engagement improved 50% after the gamification rollout on top of the geo feed.
