MicroHealth LLC — Vue on Legacy Rails: 25% Fewer Release Bugs

25% fewer post-release bugs. HIPAA-aware healthcare app modernization pairing Vue.js with legacy Rails views.

Vue.js · Rails · RSpec · Cypress · HIPAA

The problem

Legacy Rails screens blocked product velocity, and releases carried too many regressions into clinical workflows.

What we did

  1. Incrementally layered Vue.js onto Rails views instead of a risky big-bang rewrite.
  2. Expanded RSpec coverage on critical paths.
  3. Added Cypress checks around release-sensitive flows.

Why not a rewrite

A rewrite has to reach feature parity before it delivers anything, while the old app keeps changing underneath it. In a healthcare product, a bad cutover means clinicians fighting software during patient work. Layering Vue.js onto existing Rails views meant every migrated screen shipped to users straight away, and a problem in one screen stayed in that screen.

How the layering worked

Rails kept rendering the page: layout, navigation and authentication. Vue components mounted into specific elements inside chosen views, receiving only the data they needed from Rails. Validation and authorization stayed on the server. In a HIPAA-conscious app, that also limits where protected data can end up: not in client-side storage, not in browser logs, not in fields the screen never uses.

Tests made it safe

The drop in post-release bugs came from the testing around each change. RSpec coverage was expanded on the critical backend paths the new screens depended on, and Cypress end-to-end checks were added around release-sensitive flows: the clinical workflows where a regression actually hurts someone. A screen counted as migrated only when the flow through it had an end-to-end test.

Applying this to your legacy app

Pick the screens that cause the most pain, not the easiest ones: complex conditional forms, screens behind the most bug reports, workflows users repeat all day. Mount components into those views, keep the server as the source of truth, and add an end-to-end test for each flow before you change it. Stable pages can stay server-rendered indefinitely.

Outcome

Post-release bugs dropped 25% while the app stayed within HIPAA-conscious delivery practices.
